Digital banking: financial progress or a test for the Albanian market?

As more services move online, banking is changing as well. Digital banks – which operate without physical branches and offer services through apps – can sometimes raise doubts, especially in markets where trust has traditionally been built through face-to-face relationships.

But the real question is not whether this model has challenges. Every new model does. The real question is whether those challenges have been addressed from the start.

At its core, a digital bank is still a bank. It operates under the same regulations and supervision as traditional banks, offering accounts, payments, and financial services. The difference lies in how customers experience those services. Instead of branches and paperwork, processes are simpler, faster, and handled digitally.

The main advantage of digital banks comes from their design. Without branches and with automated processes, operating costs are lower and decisions can be made faster.

For customers and businesses, this means less waiting, more transparency, and banking services that can be accessed anytime.

There is a common belief that automation makes banking less personal. In reality, technology often makes processes more accurate and efficient, allowing people to focus more on guidance and support rather than paperwork.

Security is another common concern. In reality, digital banks are built with strong security systems from the start: multi-factor authentication, encrypted data, and continuous transaction monitoring.

These are not optional add-ons but fundamental parts of how the system works.

The bigger challenge is perception. In markets where people are used to physical branches, a bank that exists mainly on a phone can feel distant. But transparency and clear communication help build trust over time.

Across Europe, digital banks have already become a normal part of the financial system. Albania is now entering this phase as part of a broader financial modernization.

Initiatives like Jet Bank show that the digital banking model can also work locally, combining modern technology, secure systems, and automated processes within the existing regulatory framework.

These models do not avoid challenges. Instead, they try to solve them through the design of the system itself; from digital onboarding to continuous risk monitoring and data protection.

Digital banks are not a universal solution for every customer, but they offer a simpler, faster, and more transparent way to access financial services.

For Albania, digital banking should not be seen as a threat to traditional banking. It is simply the next step in the evolution of the financial system. And in the end, its success will not be measured by the absence of branches, but by something far more important: the ability to build trust.
